Development of new aluminium and magnesium based particulate reinforced composites with the help of ultrasound probes to disperse nanoparticulates

The correct dispersion of reinforcing particulates is one of the main technical challenges to produce metal matrix composites that may achieve the potential improvement of mechanical and thermal properties theoretically calculated. This challenge is further so in the case of submicron and nanoreinforced materials due to the higher surface to volume ratio and clustering formation.

The application of ultrasound waves has been proposed in the last years to deagglomerate nanoparticulates within metallic matrices. The objective of this project is to produce AZ91 and A356 composites and to analyse the validity of using ultrasounds to improve their dispersion.
